Join me as I host the annual shearing event !
Please note that shearing sheep is primarily performed to control fly and external parasite infestations that are inclined to occur in the sheep wool and also to clear any mucky back ends the sheep may have which tends to attract the flies in the first place. Sheep that are prone to getting messy back ends can be shorn as often as necessary in that area. The popular belief is that they will overheat in summer if left in their coats, however as long as they have access to water & shade this is not actually true. Early Season shearing is more important for the management of large herds where individuals are be checked every day for things like flystrike - unlike our small flock who are checked daily for this sort of thing. However it is important to remove the coats to clear away debris & any muck stuck in the wool.
