Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi's extraordinary 10 days living and filming with an insurgent cell allied with Al Qaeda to sabotage a key U.S./NATO supply route.

Behind Taliban Lines follows a disparate group of insurgents -- some are Taliban; most are members of warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hezb-i-Islami militia. This small group of fighters represents the war's reality -- inside Afghanistan alone there are well over 150 distinct groups that are considered Taliban, or are aligned with them and/or Al Qaeda. They have different goals, but the one thing that unites them is the war against foreign occupiers. This map highlights some of the Taliban's primary leaders, their areas of operation, and which ones could be potential participants in U.S. reconciliation efforts.

In Behind Taliban Lines, FRONTLINE provides a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the growing insurgency in Afghanistan -- a first-ever film among these militants as they travel from village to village, picking up support and weapons, imposing sharia law and collecting taxes as they open up a new battlefront in Afghanistan's northern provinces.

"We have around 3,000 to 4,000 Hezb-i-Islami men in the north," a commander named Kalakub tells Quraishi."People come to us from all over Afghanistan. They come from Chechnya, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan. We get special mujahids from abroad, but we're not allowed to talk about them." Quraishi believes that these special mujahids are mainly Arabs from Yemen and Saudi Arabia trained by Al Qaeda.

Indeed, as the men of Central Group proceed toward their target, Quraishi meets a young bomb maker from Uzbekistan who says he was trained by Al Qaeda. "America started this war in Afghanistan so that European countries like England and America would be safe," he tells Quraishi. "But they should know that once the mujahideen conquer Afghanistan, we'll aim for the Middle East and Europe."

  • what the states has all wrong about these ppl is 2 things. 1st: they are defending their own land. in all wars it's known that ppl doing so will fight harder. 2nd: they are programmed from birth to believe in their ideas/religion/allah. the 1st thing is quite normal. the 2nd thing is quite dangerous. the 2nd thing is why i don't want to see their ideas spread to other countries. but for christ's sake, just stop messing with these ppl, their beliefs make them like a hornets nest.

  • @thunderscratch66 : But, "stop messing" means that the "free world" would accept, that the fanatic fundamentalists among them will reach further out for power and will initiate a even more brutal civil war (esp. for controlling the drug traffic to Iran). In fact most of the "mujaheddin" ("those who wage the jihad/ holy war") are not native within the borders of Afghanistan, instead they're from Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt or Saudi Arabia - even from Chechnya or Dagestan.

  • @berlinkeks That means traitor

  • @SRECKORIBIC25 : I'm always looking out WHAT's left from the so called "Advance of Science" of the "Arabic World" in the medieval - and I see there's NOTHING left of it! And dear "Defenders of the 'true belief'" please spare us from the plea that's "because of the colonialism of the West". The truth is, that all countries dominated by the Islam are only consuming instead of developing new things. If the UAE would've no oil, they would still drive their camels through the desert.

  • @khorasanculture
