Comedian and ex Monty Python John Cleese investigates why the human brain finds it much easier to identify a person through a cartoon characature rather than a simple line drawing. Fascinating short video from BBC science show 'The Human Face'.

  • Google "benny Hill considered funnier than Monty Python"! And google "cleese is an inbred retard"!

  • "I think that most people think of Cleese as Basil Fawlty..."

Excuse me, in which plane of reality exactly? Fawlty Towers was hilarious, but seriously... What about the Norwegian Blue Dead Parrot, the Ministry of Silly Walks and THE MILLIONS other ways Cleese's Role in Monty Python shaped modern comicality?

Interesting, especially considering celebrities who are actor/performers, because they themselves exaggerate their own faces and features, with make-up and facial expressions while being different characters, so not everybody will instantly see Cleese here, as he means different things to different people. Maybe more late Python than Fawlty in expression to me. Charles and Bush are easier to grasp, because they are just themselves and remain pretty much straight looking.

  • I couldn't stop laughing at john cleese's model

  • I can see how the John Cleese caricature might not be immediately obvious, as caricatures are sometimes TOO exaggerated.

Still, it's interesting that when you take real photos of celebrities and distort them to exaggerate their features just enough that it still looks realistic, they become more recognizable (there have been studies on this, although I can't find any links to them right now). And some people are notoriously difficult to draw caricatures of, like Gerald Ford.

  • @henbees maybe the brain of each individual produces different caricatures of the same person. So the caricature of cleese from one person's perspective is completely different to another person? I dunno

  • yeah john cleese doesn't really have a big chin or weird forehead :/

  • well, he is.

  • I don't know about anyone else, but I have never heard anyone refer to Bush as President Bush the Second.

  • You should go for it! :)
