Why is lying wrong? Not b/c the Bible says it, not b/c your parents taught you, not b/c your Church teaches lying is wrong, not b/c of the consequences where somebody could be hurt if you lied. Hear Josh as he answers this question by pointing to the Truth.

  • this assumes god exists, and that there is such thing as right and wrong, but it's all subjective. someones right can easily be another persons wrong. but i know you'll say, but god is the perfect being and he knows perfect morals, right and wrong, but what if your child turns around and says i don't think god exists therefore lying is ok? how do you then explain morality

  • God does not fundamentally match any of those things, especially life.

  • Interesting conclusion about Hate...Is he concluding that hate is wrong because GOD is only Love and not hate.??? What do we do with all those statments about GOD is angry with sinners and or GOD hated some or any of the many other scriptures that point out these truths??????

  • Although I do appreciate this man for putting forth a well constructed argument and respect him for it, I do not agree with this because God apparently is against homosexuality regardless whether or not it is of a loving relationship.

  • @immaru That's EXACTLY what he's saying..? And he's right.

If I send you a letter about things which I don't like (baked beans, say), The fact that I wrote it down is not the root of my dislike for the beans, is it?

I write a letter of things which I don't like, because in my nature (established before the letter) I don't like them.

That is, the bible is the letter to humankind about the nature of God from eternity past, and so it's authoritative because God said it, not because it exists.

  • Well I firstly thought that this was going to be an evolutionary anti-church spiel, so I was very happy to find myself misinformed.

I greatly appreciate the message that you give and it's amazing, I've only in the last two weeks been talking about such an issue, because 'God' says, not the bible, so isn't that something?

However, I have to say that although God is Love, He /does/ hate, like he is jealous.

God /does/ hate, but it's things contrary to his nature which he hates. (sin, basically)

  • @immaru ...In that sense, where is the difference between having a list of "rights" and "wrongs", as any child following this method of thinking would surely only be doing things or not doing things due to their overriding desire to abide by what God says is right and wrong. I fear that religious teachings such as this block a certain path of self-worth and self-development in any person, not just children, as where are lessons learnt and values taught when living by someone else's rules?

  • My main problem with the message of this video is that you argue that these things aren't wrong because the bible says they are wrong, but that they are wrong because of the essence of God. Essentially, it seems that you are saying that things are not wrong because they are listed in the Bible as being wrong, but are wrong because God says so.

  • It is as simple as that. We have so many complicated bible studies and you come up with the simplicity of it. This is why I always liked listening to you. You showed me God did not have to be so complicated where we need master degrees in theology just to understand Him. Makes God more easily accessible.
