Designed using CATIA V5
MOHSIN AFRIDI

This was a final year design project for my BEng AEROSPACE ENGINEERING degree. This was a complete semester project. My team included 15 other members. We started off using my sketches and then with the Roskam series books we completed all relevant engineering calculations and came up with this design. According to our proposal we designed the most cost effective and market viable design for a VLJ. You can find some more info and team details on.

Since I was most creative and a big fan of CatiaV5. I tried to learn and apply Generative Shape Design (GSD), part design, Assembly and Photoshop work-benches as best as I could. Although I was not totally aware of Best Design Practices at the time and my TA sucked ass. I still managed to present my design intent in a good way.
I have come a long way since then.

  • Thanks for the appreciation.

Since it was a conceptual design project therefore focus was on getting the calculations and the design feasible given the constraints. Only after a few days of playing around with V5 I came up wid this design. GSD skin was used for nose and tail. thickness in mid fus. No Kinematics. Only nav . had to design the engine cowling using actual engine dwgs we could hustle etc etc. Hope it ans ur qs.

For more chk out the lil site we had.

  • You about you update the "About this Video" section to say more about this design project ... how long it took, why you're doing it. How you designed the wings... whatever ... useful background information.

Even what modules of CATIA you used... etc.

Compare CATIA to other CAD packages.

  • I was taught AutoCAD and CATIA mainly at Ryerson. There is no comparison between them obviously. CATIAV5 is the best CAD package , infact its much much more than a CAD package, and I donot say this only cuz I work for Dassault. I really love the user friendly interface and limitless functionality of CATIA. Its a complete Product Lifecycle Management system. Even though progs like PRO-E are also doing well.

  • very colorful video ... did you actually design this plane?

  • thank you and Yes.

  • well i am glad u like it

  • 1 more question.

Were any of your parts borrowed such as engines or did your team fabricate those from the book on the design process?

  • Very nice design.

Had a similar project freshman year that turned out looking like a largemouth bass.

    quick question:

Is your aircraft exterior just a skin from GSD or did you add thickness to it?

Did you and your team animate it in DMU kinematics?

  • really nice job, congratulations!

but did you check pilot's visibility thoroughly? is there all right with it?

  • excelente video

  • CATIA IS AMAZING

  • Bravo with updating the "About This Video" section. Much more informative.

You're Canadian! Me too. I wish I could have learned CATIA, but I ended up learning PRO/Engineer instead, which is powerful enough, but not as elegant as CATIA.

CATIA was too expensive for me to buy a license for at the time.

When will Dassault make a 5th generation air superiority fighter? If there has been anything since the Rafale, I don't know about it.
