Leading partners: PA State Representative Dwight Evans, Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation, Foundations, Inc. Preparing todays youth to thrive in the workplace of the 21st century requires new thinking and creative solutions—both are main ingredients of the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Technology (PCAT). PCAT, a new model for youth development in Northwest Philadelphia, targets young people between the ages of 14 and 21—including those who have dropped out and wish to reengage and resume their studies. Now in its pilot phase, PCAT has already launched an urban farm and marketplace program at Martin Luther King High School called Seeds for Learning. This unique, hands-on program enables students to develop business skills and interests in science through outdoor experiences. PCAT also started a Technology is Power Seminar (TIPS) that provides training for Microsoft Certification. TIPS is planning to add computer graphics and GIS mapping software training components, both eligible for high school or college credit. In addition, PCAT is now developing innovative programs in: visual and performing arts; culinary arts with a focus on locally grown ingredients; technology careers; green energy; environmental design and horticulture. Plans are also underway for a state-of-the-art PCAT arts studio to fulfill the need for culturally enriching and productive learning experiences—making it a great asset to the broader community.
