Third of selected excerpts from 'Orfeo ed Euridice' staged at Glyndebourne, 1982. In which we find the lamentations of Orfeo heard at last by Amore (Love), who tells him of a way to retrieve and restore his dead wife from the depths of Hades - with a condition that must be met. Amore tells Orfeo that on his return from Hades with Euridice to the light of day, he is not to look at her at all until they have passed beyond the caves of the Styx.

(Only selected scenes will be uploaded from this fine production. Rest will follow soon....)

The great British mezzo-soprano, Dame Janet Baker, sings the role of Orfeo with heartbreaking sincerity in this Glyndebourne staging (by Peter Hall). These performances were the singer's farewell to the operatic stage. Not to be missed !

Act 1, Scenes 1 & 2 : 'Numi! barbari Numi! ' 'Assisterà Pietoso Amor l'infelice consorte!'

---------

Aria

ORFEO
Numi! barbari Numi!
D'Acheronte e d'Averno
Reggitori implacati! la cui mano
Il fiero Pluto vuol de' cenni suoi
Crudel ministra, voi giammai commuove
Beltà né gioventude! a me rapiste
La dolce mia consorte!
Oh! memoria crudel! Ahimè! non valse
La grazia sua dal barbaro destino
Quella cara a salvar! Implacati tiranni!
A voi la vo' rapir!
Penetrare vogl'io ne l'atro Averno,
Il mio pianto dovrà
L'ira vostra placar!
Ricercare saprò nel vostro orrore
La mia sposa, il mio bene!

SCENA II
(Amore e detto)

Recitativo

AMORE
Assisterà
Pietoso Amor l'infelice consorte!
A te concede Giove, in sua pietà,
Varcar le pigre onde di Lete. Va!

Ti rendi degno
Del celeste favor!

  • These are only selected excerpts? Could you please tell me where I can watch the entire opera if this is possible at all?
