i got my pickit2 first day was workin ok, but later my pc it saids PICKIT2 NOT FOUND

Hi, I've been using MCUs from TI, Renesas, etc but now would like to try PICs. This kit looks ok but the board has a 44pin PIC which I wouldn't use. How easy is to connect/debug/program using this kit with a smaller part (14, 18, 24 pin DIP)? Do PICs provide a direct interface that can be connected to the programmer or will I need to purchase special boards/adapters for each part? Thanks
