We're in a small town in Central Italy -- Orvieto in the Umbria region.
The town was one of the founders, in 1999, of the international association of Cittaslow
-- the network of towns where living is easy.
Among Cittaslow's core values are Living Well which means real food,
promoting local identities,
protection of the landscape and the natural environment,
and looking again at slower lifestyles, rather than the fast pace and pollution of the big city.
The Pedibus project was born out of these ideals.
Promoted by the Comune of Orvieto, the schools and the local health authority, Pedibus not only enhances the health of the schoolchildren, it also reduces CO2 emissions and creates a real sense of community amongst all those involved.
The project is above all for the pupils of the Luigi Barzini primary school who arrive at school on foot every morning along three different routes.
They are guided by parent volunteers, and the Pedibus picks them up from a series of stops along the routes.
Pedibus is an example of community action to resolve a major problem of our town centres
-- and that's the traffic jams when children are driven to school during rush hour.
