CJs Jimmy Leow and Chan Lilian met up with MPPP President YDP Tan Cheng Chui at the historical Protestant Cemetery in Penang to discuss on ways to maintain this heritage site. Recently, both CJs made a short video indicating the needs to keep this place in good condition to attract tourists and also for the future generation.

Together with the CJs were Penang Heritage Trust's President, Dr. Choong Sim Poey and Magdalene Ng who were delighted that MPPP is taking positive steps to maintain the Protestant Cemetery. Both CJs also witnessed the clearing up of rubbish at the entrance of the cemetery by MPPP personnel after Tan's instruction.

  • Beautiful old cemetery, but yes, it needs professional restorers to clean the vegetation off the tombs, some of the trees need to be pruned (branches keep falling), and the path in the center needs to be improved.

Te Catholic Cemetery behind it needs even more work.... the ground is overgrown with weeds, and some kind of paved path needs to be added.

  • Criskity,

Your video showed that the cemetery's condition has improved alot. When I was there 8 months ago, it was really bad, no one recognized Francis Light's place of rest. I am happy that the local council has done something about this historical site, but like to mentioned, it still need more work to bring its glory.

    Great job on the video.

    Jimmy

  • I'm glad work is being done. When I visited a couple weeks ago, I saw that a dead tree had been cut down. Between Feb 28 and March 2, someone had carefully applied fresh paint to the lettering on the tomb of James Philip Hobson (I know because I happened to photograph his grave on both dates). I trust that this was the work of MPPP.

I visited Penang in 2009 and again 2 weeks ago, photographing graves in the cemetery. I've documented over 330 names. They can be seen at the Findagrave website.

  • Hi Criskity,

You document graves? It must be a spooky job but this is very interesting. Are you staying in Penang?

  • Yes, it's a hobby of mine... I volunteer for the Findagrave website. I stayed in Penang earlier this month, and visited several cemeteries in Penang and Perak. I'm in Taiwan now.

"Graving" is an interesting hobby: I enjoy the history, the detective work, the travel. And by photographing graves and recording information from grave stones, I'm helping compile and preserve information for future generations.
