Go get a real education kids! My dad was an I.B.E.W electrician and I quit 2 years into my apprenticeship when I realized that I would never want to do this for the rest of my life. Way too much B.S. Well at least I didn't work for a non-union shop - those guys are just miserable for the rest of their lives.

@remmyjable It depends on which JATC. Each local is self-governed, and so are their JATCs. Some are phenominal, others are ok, but there will always be those that are garbage.

@Doug19752533 IBEW too. I volunteered one Christmas season for the hall. All they kept saying was " If the reporter talks to you, it's IBEW, IBEW". I never volunteered again. I do HFH volunteering, but I'll never wear an IBEW shirt. I do it because I have the time, and I have the skill, and someone needs my help. I won't do it to support the illusion that we can do no wrong, or the IBEW is the end all in electrical work. Shame my leaders can't understand this.

i am a proud IBEW member, but i do have to disagree with them saying the ABC and IEC are poor apprenticeships. i went through IEC and my instruction was very good and in depth. first year was all basic theory, and residential applications. second year was trigonometry, print reading, in depth AC theory, third year was motor control and low voltage systems, and fourth year tied it all together with prep for the state journeyman exam (and plenty of code each year).

You'll never get into IBEW unless you're somebody's brother-in-law or a crackhead.
I have an AS in Electrical Technology, an AS in HVAC Technology, and I scored near perfect on the aptitude test. I qualified for an interview and showed up nicely dressed, and received my "sorry, we chose other candidates" letter in the mail a few weeks later.
You should see some of the tattooed dumbasses they let into IBEW. Labor unions will be an antiquity soon anyway.

You're better off getting an engineering degree and designing the f*cking systems. At least you'll have a desk job and won't have to work with drug addicts all day.
