I always felt that this track suffered from Joe Meek's speed-up technique. here is the Geoff Goddard classic at what I think is closer to "normal" speed.
Incidentally, the tequnique is nithing new. In the very old recording days, engineers used to slow down their cutting lathes in order to get more time on their 10" 78 masters. Then, when the record was played back on a commercial gramophone, the option was there for the listener to either have a brisk track with everything in it, or slow it back down to something probably about 70-75 r.p.m., and hear the track just as it was recorded.
Good point, but I feel it could be slowed even further to get to it's original recording speed. I can't quote percentages or speed at the mo, but if you slow it until it starts in the key of 'E' , you'll be just about there! Incidentally, who did the alien voice on this? Anybody know?
Yes, it's good the meek Trisha Goddard didn't ruin her rrrreputation on the racing track. But yes, restoring it to 'it is' original flavour is a paramount film called Touche, you keep moaning at Lisa.
let's have a sense of proportion- fortunately meek and goddard's reputations don't rest on this particular track, so restoring it to it's originally recorded tempo isn't exactly tantamount to drawing a 'tache on the mona lisa!
Joe was always searching for ways to enhance his product and speeding-up was one of them. There was no easy way of achieving this in Joe's day - he wrapped a rubber band around the capstan wheel of his recorder. He did it successfully with Telstar, raising it by a semitone, and this encouraged him to do it all the more. Sadly, he didn't know where to draw the line and many subsequent recordings (e.g.Cameos, Reg Austin,Dowlands, Four Matadors, etc) sound ridiculous at 45 rpm.
I meant 'nothing' new, sorry! Doing Clousou impressions now! Keep rockin' kids !!
