When I was a kid I was in shock when I saw the real singer (Cynthia Johnson) performing this song on Top Pop. I always thought that Debby was the original singer.

That is the saddest thing about 70s funk/disco. A lot of artists who performed on these tracks were paid off as session musicians & it made economic sense to the producers to farm projects out to artists already resident in other markets. So we (in the UK), would have Doris doing it as record67able points out. Other nations would have their home grown talents doing the same. Now we have a global market this isn't as prevalent & there is a growing demand for these old 'cover versions'.
