I have hsv-1. I was not promiscuous. I was with a guy that I had been with for years and didnt know he had it. Aside from having this, I suffer for viral meningitis that happens on and off w/o warning. I will admit that I have considered suicide because of the hospital visits and the shame. Luckily some guys I've met didn't seem to mind and I'm still dating, but it's the herpes related meningitis that is scary. You guys can make fun of us, but when you have it it's not funny.

Please don't consider killing yourself. People freak out when someone sneezes near them yet disregard the consequences of having sexual intercourse, exchanging fluids and swapping skin cells. They think they're high and mighty and they aren't. Everyone that has ever had sex is equally at risk. You are no worse than anyone else. And don't feel embarrassed...I bet you anything that over half of the doctors/nurses and staff you encounter have had an experience with an STD!

I also have hsv-1 and took it really hard myself. Suicide is not the answer and I am very glad you and me decided not to go that route. I am still battling the emotional aspect of it, but so far I've been very lucky and have been able to be open and honest about it. The more honest you are the less shame you will feel. I have genital warts, also known as HPV. Guys have ran from me once they found out I had it, as though I was a plague. It's something I hate talking about and I get extremely depressed when a guy tells me "I don't think we should be together b/c of it." I'm sick of guys only looking at that, and not looking at ME. The guy I caught it from knew he had it, but never told me. I'm praying that one day they will come up with a cure.
