I figured it out. There are two ways to connect the phone directly to a computer via USB. One is to sync music by going to My Music > Sync (which works for music), and the other is to go to Tools > USB Mass Storage, which makes the phone (microSD card) appear as a USB drive on my computer with all the expected folders (pix, flixs, etc.) and this is where I can successfully transfer movies.

Are you compressing, thus converting the videos to Mp4 or another format it can play?

I have a microSD card and I can put music onto it while it is installed in the phone by plugging the phone into my computer using the USB cable. When I go to My Music > Sync the phone appears on my computer as "LG VX11000 External Memory." By dragging music files into this folder, I can successfully put music, but not videos, on the microSD card.

What do you mean by card reader? You can do it with the USB cable but movies will be too large to store on the phone. You need a microSD card (I think that's probably what you meant.)
