Oakland Axe Factory 8 string guitar. This video shows the guitar off a little better than the previous video. Here are it's specs-
scale- 30"
neck- bamboo neck thru with bubinga fret board, jumbo frets and abalone dot inlays
body- poplar with spalted maple top
pickup- EMG 808
bridge- OAF hardtail 8 string thru body
tuners- import sealed guitar tuners 14:1 ratio
nut- brass
adjustable delrin string retainer
clear oil finish
Strings- Ernie Ball slinky's for the highest 7 strings and a .104 low E string from Octave4plus.
This guitar is tuned from low to high E-A-D-G-C-F-A-D It is essentially a 4 string bass on the lowest 4 strings and a standard guitar tuned down a whole step on the highest 6 string. The concept behind this instrument is that you can have one instrument that covers the range of both guitar and bass and not really have to compromise. You can play bass all day long on this. You can play it like a guitar for any musical style. As opposed to a standard 8 string guitar which is definitely a guitar, this is a true hybrid that is at home in both worlds. This is one of several similar instruments like this that I have made. The first one I made went to a musician for bass duties, classical fingerstyle and two hand tapping. The second one is now being used as the primary guitar for a very progressive metal band. The biggest improvement that I have made to it along the way is the Octave4plus .104 string. The biggest string that I could get with a ball end was .090 and it was a little weak. I restrung it with the .104 from Octave4plus and it made a world of difference in how tight the note sounded. It transformed the guitar from pretty cool to very cool with only one string.

  • That wood finish makes the instrument VERY attractive. Nice shape and craftsmanship.

  • Thank you. It is Tru Oil gun stock finish. I actually surprised myself with the end result. The wood itself really made the difference though.

  • That looks very nice!

  • Thank you. I just sold it yesterday and now I miss it. Time to make another one.
