It's a minor thing, but the earlier Fallout games are RPGs, not RTSs (there's nothing "Real Time" about them at all, actually). Without getting into the whole "Fallout 3 rules/sucks" discussion, I think it's fair to say that F1 and F2 places a heavier emphasis on traditional RPG elements such slow-paced combat, complex character development/statistics and extensive NPC interaction.

@vrz07 (I know you asked this 11 months ago, and I think you probably already figured this out already, but I'll help you just in case) Yes, the VATS system is available from the very beginning, but only when you(your character) is 19 years old. If you are playing it on your PC then press the V-button, RB-button on Xbox360, R2(or L2)-button on PS3

@HardWarUK i think your confusing yourself by creating your own video game genre's known as "sworders" , i dont know what this is, but you can say something has qualities of a fps because in the game you have access to guns and can freely shoot in the first person perspective...the reviewer said it had qualities of a first person shooter...which it does. theres no such genre as a "first person sworder" so why would anyone say that ever?

are they ever going to make a patch for the ps3 that fixes freezing and occasional lag

No, but you can listen to the radio on the pipboy.

@vrz07 It's been a while since I've played it, but I'm pretty sure it's available from the beginning. If not, then very early on. To use it effectively is up to you. It depends on your style of combat and gameplay.

So I suppose Fallout 1 and 2 had third person shooter qualities, and the Ultima series had 2D Sworder qualities and indeed every single RPG, by your reckoning, will have some other genre quality. And yet all RPG's have combat of some type, and yet until 'multiformat' they were called RPG's! What both Oblivion and Fallout 3 have are the same as Wizardry RPG's have REALTIME combat, versus PAUSABLE combat, and what Fallout 3 has is BOTH. This is nothing like FPS gameplay! Stats are involved!

I disagree. Often in the game you'll find yourself stealthily sniping enemies and stuff like that with the same exact dynamics as an FPS. It's an RPG no doubt, but it's totally a hybrid in my opinion.
There are legit first person RPGs, but I think of games like Bard's Tale as the prime example - not Fallout or Oblivion.
And I really don't consider 3PS's a genre, they're usually action games in my book.

Isn't it interesting that when laser guns are involved the game has 'first person shooter qualities', but did any reviewer say Oblivion had 'first person sworder qualities'? Exactly! This is just a Sci-Fi RPG, plain and simple. Just like Oblivion is a Fantasy RPG, plain and simple! Does nobody understand what a plain ol' RPG is any more?

I'd say Oblivion is a hybrid RPG/FPS. Fallout 3 is the same kind of thing, except it is much more an FPS in the gameplay aspects.
