Hi, I own a Welsh Corgi and my dog doesn't move an inch when he's on a leash :(
What are your suggestions?
Hope my question gets answered :)

A well trained dog is such a joy.

Great tips! It's Valentine's Day night and my "fella" is at his place watching tv, so I think I'm gonna take my other men for a trip to town for a walk in the park and try out some of your leash handling techniques. I'll subscribe, too. That way I'll have something to do and someplace to go with the ones who love me most and we can use your training techniques as homework, exercise, and entertainment! Thanks for being here!!!

@vanuvius I'm not a dog trainer, but my instincts, having had dogs for many years, tell me your advice is wrongheaded and ill-advised. It sounds as if you're going on the assumption that dogs process thoughts the same way that humans do, which they certainly do not. According to your advice, if they don't do what you want them to do, force them—brutally if necessary. Do you consider your dog(s) companions or objects to control and recipients of your aggression and power?

Here's the problem.I have a Large dog and I'm not a very strong type of person.I love my dog but he has a reputation for running away. Every time i take him to go out for a walk,he gets super excited and starts to pull like crazy before i can even lock the doors.I have to hold onto him tightly because he's really strong and i have to lock the doors at the same time.I dont want to hold onto him tightly but i have to or he's going to run off again. What should i do?

@dawggonecrazee Use a prong collar, have him wear it right behind the ears nice and snug. While you're heeling and he doesnt obey command give a quick light pop with the leash. On a scale of 1-10... a 1 or 2 should be fine just to get his attention. Gentle leaders are actually harmful to dogs and cause neck problems as well as halti's with back problems. Use the brand Herm Sprenger and for a pit bull, you'll need either the 2.25mm or 3mm depending on his size.

Is there a leader that a keeshond can`t swipe off it`s nose in 2 seconds flat? I have tried the halti, gentle leader,dogmatic....head down, all off his short snout in seconds with his clever little paw.If it`s too tight and prevents him from panting,he just lies on the floor and won`t walk.I have tried leaving the different leaders on him for him to get used to.No way Jose.He has trained for a year and knows how to walk to heel, when he wants to.How can I make him think he wants to ,ALL THE TIME

First of all, pack leaders don't give a choice. If you want your dog to walk, and he doesn't want to, then he's disrespecting you. Your dog has developed an attitude problem. When you have his leash connected to his harness, and he refuses to walk, just walk and pull him along until he gets moving. Once he starts walking, praise him. if he stops, keep his leash in your hand, and firmly planted at your side, just walk and dont stop until he starts walking.
Eric - Another awesome job of showing and explaining leash walking! Keep up the good work.

hey eric!!! i have a 3 month old chihuahua, when can i start training him wit ha leash? i also have a retractable leash, how can i train him with that?? thanks!!

You can start now. The earlier the better. I would get a regular six foot leash. Retractable leashes are not good for training. Good luck!

Hey Eric. I am using a Halti and it works pretty fine - I want to know what do you think about training with Halti.

Head halters (Gentle Leaders and Haltis) are great and I use them all the time. I like the design of the Gentle Leader better than the Halti but they both get excellent results.
