Melissa Leo and Christian Bale won the supporting actress and actor Oscars on Sunday (February 27, 2011) in a ceremony where many early honors went to front-runners. Leo played a tough-minded mom and Bale portrayed her drug-addicted son in the critically-acclaimed boxing movie "The Fighter."
The two were favored to win heading into the Academy Awards based upon their earlier wins this awards season. Both nabbed trophies at Critics' Choice, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Awards for their respective roles.
Leo was pitted against her co-star Amy Adams in the supporting actress category all season. She told members of the media backstage that she was glad Kirk Douglas stretched out the time it took to announce her win because she was so nervous.
"I got to take more than one glance over at Amy, who was sitting just in front of me, away from where he was. I wanted to watch him because he was just delightful to watch. I wanted to peek at Amy. So it strung it out in a rather delightful way for me and actually allowed a heart rate that had gotten fairly high as the category was announced to settle a little bit and wait and see what the envelope says."
One reporter asked Leo how it felt to be the first one to drop the "f-bomb" at an Oscars ceremony. She answered with a carefully-worded response.
"Those words, I apologize to anyone that they offend. There's a great deal of the English language that is in my vernacular."
Bale was emotional over his win, choking back tears when thanking his wife and family as he accepted his statuette.
The Welsh actor shared with reporters one of the inspirations for his work in front of the camera.
"I didn't really ever take acting classes, I never went to drama school or anything," said Bale, 37. "I always feel like I'm having to make up for that while other people know what they're doing really. And I'm still sort of just winging it. I saw something one time. It was Jimi Hendrix. And I just adore the guy's talent, and his just raw ability to just communicate through his guitar. And I saw something about his fingers bleeding, just blood dripping off the strings. And I always went, 'That's it. That's it, you know?'"
Bale, who transformed his body in order to play an emaciated drug addict in "The Fighter" talked about his willingness to do so again.
"So, if it's necessary, I'll do it, you know? I'm getting a little bit older. I'm starting to recognize if I do too much, it may be not coming back for me. I don't have quite that same mentality that I had only a few years ago where I thought I was invincible. And it didn't matter what I did, I was coming through. You know? I got a child now. I just want to be really smart about any body alterations that I make in the future."
"The Fighter" is based on a true story. Mark Wahlberg played the lead role.
