Shante is totally east coast... Queensbridge.. Not a gansta style rapper... nor do i agree she laid ANY foundation for that sound.

I was present for this battle.. (i believe this is the one at the Marriott Marqui in 85).. (i worked there and got to see this and meet Fresh Prince when he was 17 and giving out promos of his latest hit.. Parents just don't understand) Shante killed Busy Bee this day!! But she wasn't declared the winner at the spot. Busy Bee was. ..It was still a man's game .... It was dope either way and Shante was def freestyling....

@Chindro2828 I'm saying that her style was laying the origins of gangsta rap. It was aggressive, utilising a lot of profanity and moving away from party based lyrics of the decade before. Of course its not the stuff we hear today which is far, far worse but its a step in that direction. Nothing twisted about my opinion at all. By the way, I like her style, I was there from the early days.

@maccagrabme Sorry dude you got it twisted, Roxanne was not originating gangsta rap, maybe pioneering diss rap. No gangsta in any of her rhymes.

I think she only sounded better because she had a more aggressive style. B came from a disco era and was a party rapper whereas Shante was the origins of gangsta rap. Two completely different styles, neither of them better, just different eras. A bit like comparing disco to house.
