The Russians have the most powerful and advanced Airborne units in the world--NOT the U.S. Army; we are behind them thanks to stupidity--while we play more-Airborne-than-thou snob games and sing "blood on the risers", the RUSSIANS ARE DOING THINGS TO IMPROVE AIRBORNE FORCES 3D MANEUVER COMBAT CAPABILITIES.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI6rQxOkGgo
First, their parachutes don't trail deployment bags so they can jump twice as fast as us (300 mph) lower (200 feet) or higher (up to 12, 000 feet) IN FRONT OF THE JET ENGINES OF THEIR TRANSPORT PLANES = more men faster into the fight below as the men jump simultaneously as their BMDs exit the rear ramp--and they don't lose 2 men who act as safeties dragging static-lines and D-Bags back inside
http://www.combatreform.com/safetiesandloadmasterpullinstaticlinescombatpower...
so jump doors can be closed so the aircraft can speed away.

Next, their chutes have ripcords/timers so when they exit with a drogue chute they can jump at HIGH ALTITUDES (up to 10, 000 feet) above enemy MANPADS and delay main chute opening--without the men having to become stabilized body freefall trained--maybe it means one less HOOAH! badge to wear on your uniform--but it means THOUSANDS of Paras can high altitude, low open (HALO) so USAF/Army planes don't get shot down, so Airborne operations in mountainous areas can occur (re: 509th jump into Avellino in WW2) and SURPRISE upon the enemy achieved.
Look up the YOUTUBE Norwegian SF video;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHPBFRlKd44
at 1:10 and you'll see they use drogue chutes without their manhoods falling off.

If the BMD light tracked mechanized, Russian Airborne had been sent to Afghanistan and Iraq instead of our "seize & hold" WW2 re-enactment foot sloggers and Humvee trucksters, Bin Laden and Saddam would not have escaped. The American Airborne knows how to do it right--the airdrop and airland of M551 Sheridans and M113 Gavin light tanks in 1989 that bagged Noriega proves it--

...but Army officers/NCOs rotate in/out and the current crop obsessed with re-enacting boo-hoo "Band of Brothers" episodes complete with preventible casualties are just sitting on their 4th point of contacts (butts) relying on the work of GREAT LEADERS who have gone before them to do all their thinking already took all the risks doing something new. Winston Churchill said: "To improve is to change. To be perfect is to change OFTEN". The American Airborne is long overdue to get off its ass and make drastic changes for the better and start acting like and living like leaders like General Gavin instead of whining about WW2 losses and projecting their achievements onto themselves.

We do not need to hear ONE Airborne Para or Ranger--least of all a marine--beat their chest "how great we art" until we get off our asses and surpass the Russian Airborne's capabilities. We have a lot of work to do, so let's start studying and start making TANGIBLE improvements, the first of which should be typing a damn memo and requesting M113 Gavins in storage (not the 13, 000 the heavy forces now use) to re-equip the Delta Weapons companies and HHC anti-tank and mortar sub-units to get them out of wheeled Humvee deathtrap trucks.

P.S. #1: Oh, yeah the Russians were the FIRST TO DO LARGE-SCALE PARACHUTE COMBAT OPERATIONS in 1928 and 1939--not the Germans:

P.S. #2 don't bitch about the video quality you can get the points made here.

2 men must remain inside the carrier once it is airdropped??!! Screw that!!!

No one HAS TO be inside the BMD; it saves time. There is a price to pay for military advantages. If you are not willing to do what it takes to WIN, don't do war.

just thumbed through an Osprey book on Cambodian army - they were issued M-113s with 50 cal shield and 106mm recoilless rifles. Why don't ones in Iraq have rrs??
biukucanoe 3 years ago 3
Great question. Some M113 Gavins should have 106mm RRs...the TOW ATGM wrongly replaced 106mm RRs when they should have SUPPLEMENTED them combatreform dot com slash popguns dot htm

US had an airborne tank, but retired the Sheridan and passed up on buford replacement for Stryker which can't be airdropped. M113 is fine APC that can be airdropped, and can be fitted with anti-tank rockets but US Army doesn't give airborne anything heavier than a hummer I think now. US doesn't have training gear like that does it?

Army Airborne parachute drops 22, 000 pound FMTV series trucks, but your view is essentially correct--why not drop 22, 000 pound M113 Gavins and get armored vehicle shock action?
