A Naval Salute in Abu Dhabi

The Royal Australian Navy Band is a prestigious unit of the Australian Defence Force and 'one of Australia's premier military ensembles'. The band is led by Commander Phillip Anderson OAM RAN and is structured around a Directorate of Music and six detachments of full-time and part-time musicians positioned in various locations around Australia.

The level of services provided by the band is diverse, and it maintains a highly respected profile within the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian community. Within its force structure the band has positions for five officers, 101 full-time musicians and 120 part-time musicians. Throughout its history, the band has performed for thousands of audiences at home and abroad. Today, the band continues a proud tradition of providing musical, ceremonial and public relations support for the Royal Australian Navy.

The band deployed a contingent of 30 musicians to support the 2011 International Defence Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi. The theme to the band's segment of the Opening Ceremony was A Naval Salute from Australia. During its performance the band featurer bugles and boatswain calls, which are traditional naval instruments used for communicating messages onboard ships, and its drummers Beat to Quarters as a mark of respect to all seafarers.

A key element of the band's performance was the Cheer Ship, a traditional naval salute, that was afforded to the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces.
