I dont know what country you are in, but in the uk you can download large amounts of data on virgin which use fiber optic cables which are pretty fast. I have downloaded music, movies and software from the app store

Since the arrival of tablets optical drives are becoming less relevant. I have time capsule with 3tb which backs up my iphone/ipad and mac (i have a macbook pro not a macbook air, but i havent used the optical drive for over a year
