Final flight/display by RAN Fleet Air Arm S2E/G Trackers at NAS Nowra, NSW, Australia, mid 1984. Unfortunately the Seaking helicopters engine idling nearby the camera ruin the sound for these and earlier A4G Skyhawk final flights/displays.

  • I think they have muffeled the engine on these now. I remember as a kid in the early 80's you could here S-2's for miles now its just sounds like a twin engine!!!

  • Unfortunately the camera man decided to stay next to the 'running Sea King Helos' not far away; thus any meaningful S2 sound is drowned out for most of this historic video by these 'idling angry palm trees'. The other Skyhawk takeoff video has the proper noise without any helo sounds because they have not started yet. Pity. Noise was the best thing about Trackers. :-)

  • there are a couple of these things in my town that are used for fire fighting. i remember as a child, the roar of the engines like a million harleys ripping through the sky when they took off.

in the last few years, people living in the hills of the valley have complained alot about the sound. so CDF upgraded the engines and propellers.

now they are faster and quieter. i miss the old sound =[

  • When I was a kid around 72-74, the USN S-2's used to do touch and go's day and night from Charleston NAS in Rhode Island, I loved that sound, just loved it. So much so, that I bought a T-28!

Yes, too bad the vacuum cleaners are running.

  • That looks like a feathered engine fly by at the 4:00 mark. I wouldn't have wanted to try that that with my 1000 hours in type. Good flying. there.

  • I remember them well. I worked on the very last of them in the U.S. Navy, along with A-4 Skyhawks. I also worked on A-3 Sky Warriors, an EC-121K, and an Admirals C-131 Convair. The crackle of the 1820 is quite distinctive, and yes I even took a turn on the H-3 Sea King. These days at almost 60, I work on H-60 rescue helicopters for the Coast Guard.

  • They're not muffled, the volume's down.

I was a flightline mechanic in a USN squadron of 40 S-2s in the 70s. Best job I ever had, and I still love the thunder of those radials. No video sound can do that justice.

  • It's so sad to see them still currently retired.

  • Thanks mate , interesting to know.... here's hoping one will fly soon enough...

  • Nine of them were recovered and are stored indoors in Victoria. One is with HARS and a few with the museum and historic flight.
