The rope doesn't burn because most likely there is a short piece of chain from the rope to the poi head where the fire actually reaches up to.
(Or at least that is what we do.)

fair play your quite good =) i just made a rope dart fire poi too but iv put 2 heads on it, i find it helps the weight but you seem to have it down. nice vid dude peace =)

Its all about timing... You are using the top of your foot at the laces, as the rope becomes taught and the dart appears to go toward the sky you push your foot into a front kick. With the momentum of the dart it should kick around and shoot out like a normal kick or throw.
