How does General Aviation serve our communities? General Aviation [G.A.] is more than just small airplanes out to see the countryside. G.A. includes flying for business, charitable flying, news reporting, fire fighting, search and rescue, flight instruction, and recreational flying. Thousands of pilots donate their time and aircraft to help instill the love of aviation in our children with programs like Young Eagles, Learn to Fly Day, Girl Scouts with Wings, Eagle Scout Aviation badge, 4H Aero programs and more.
Why do we need all these little airports? Consider this, smaller General Aviation airports can be "reliever" airports for larger commercial-type fields. As well, they serve recreational flyers, business travelers, flights for charitable purposes, allow business on the field, law enforcement flights, medical evacuation, fire fighting flight and news/media.
What role can a GA airport fill in an emergency? As recently as the Haitian crisis, GA airports can receive supplies, water, and personnel. As well, many times larger airports sustain larger damage.
