Cops - a poem (first live reading)

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
Cops
grew up
too frightened
to be enlightened
they dreamed of
a job with a gun

some wanted to kill
others wanted to protect
they all wanted a pension check

now they're slaves
to the law, and the order...
yes, that's an order!

literally forbidden from supporting the cause

sworn to the Constitution
instead protect capitalism:
zombie corporations
and their wealthy
wizards of oz

from
petty peasants
who dare
to still care
about the American Dream

protesting the notion
we're cogs in a machine

you can understand that, can't you?
you don't have to be so mean
you're Working Class too
we're on the same team

Truth and Justice get lost in a fog
when you lie awake
convincing yourself
you're just
doing
your
job
