A walk through the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro

This is Rocinha, one of Rio de Janeiro's most notorious "favelas" or shanty towns built somewhat precariously on the side of the mountains in the city. The nieghborhood was somewhat volitile while we were there as the rival drug gangs who control the area were quite literally at war with each other over control of the area. The Brazilian army(Police?) had set up checkpoints we had to go through to get here. Despite the checkpoints, soldiers on one block, uzi toting teenagers on next, I never felt personally threatened and this is one of the most incredible glimpes into another culture I have ever seen. On the whole Brazilians, even the poorest of them are among the most warm and welcoming people i have ever met.

The "walking" in the title refers to how I got there, you dont get that view without either a helicopter or one hell of a hike through militia territory. the slightest incline in Rio geography generally puts you in a neighborhood you aint supposed to be in. Until I got used to just being there and realized the local warlords really weren't going to kill us. I wasn't about to whip out a camera and act like an idiot tourist (even though thats what I was..lol).

NO One will be shot or killed due to race or nationality because they are entering a favela though you have to make it clear who you are and what you are doing there do to the fact that they do NOT like strangers, if you make your peace and ur self clear they'll alow u to do anything, plus the favelas only have a bad imagine but the people that lives there are incredibly genuine. @RebRebel1 have you actually been to Rio? No doubt there's a couple rough azz favelas, but Its mostly a beautiful, cosmopolitan city, in fact, i'd say quality of life is actually better there than most parts of the US!
