Ioanna Kourbela was born and raised in Plaka of Athens, which is next to the Akropolis, Pnyka and the Ancient Market-Agora. As a child, Ioanna used to play with yarns and knitting needles at her grandfather's shop, where she met travellers who sought the Hellenic light in any form. So, she decided to capture the light in yarns. Ioanna designed her first collection in 2003. Since then she has designed many more, which have travelled everywhere. She shapes of an ancient pillar, the feel of the air, the seams of the sky. Ioanna likes to think that her career unfolds like yarn.
