I clip my aussie here in Florida. He's more active and pants a good deal less. It's also really tough to deal with matting when they get wet with all that hair.

Fathom is clipped for many reasons: He is cooler when on the beach, boat & kayaking, the long hair also made it difficult (Heavy when wet) to get in and out of water via boat, kayak ect.
Salt & sand from the ocean makes him itch when it dries (Thus the shampoo bath) Quick rinse between dips is great to keep him in comfort.
I do not clip his undercoat off (The longer hairs is clipped for reasons listed above) Thank you for your concerns, I hope I have help your questions satisfactory. :)
