The San Diego Little Italy Sicilian Community keeps the traditions of the old country alive on the shores of San Diego! The history of the Madonna Del Luma dates back to 1777 when the painting of the Blessed Mother was found in Porticello, Sicily by fishermen. A church was built there in her honor and the blessed Mother became "Patrona di Porticello."

The town celebrated with a feast day each year in October. People that left Porticello carried the devotion to Our Lady wherever they went. Whenever you meet people from Porticello, you will find the Madonna del Lume embedded deeply in their hearts.

In San Diego, the Madonna Del Lume Society was established at the Our Lady of the Rosary Church in 1937, where the devotion and traditions are carried on till this day.
