This version (the 45, with echo and a faster pace) is very hard to find. I haven't seen it on CD yet, though I've been looking for years. I wish they hadn't put the siren in it, 'cause I'd really like a copy for my 'pod. I own many copies of the album and a number of compilations, all of which have the album version. Note that even though this mix is radically different it still uses the same vocal track, as evidenced by the mistake he makes: "He stale behind" rather than "He'll stay behind."

This song still makes me cry when I hear it. I can't listen through it without breaking down and sobbing. I'm almost positive that as Eric Burdon sings the first refrain of "Skyyyyyyyyy Pilot!", he sings it solo without other voices. Am I wrong?

I remember hearing this on the radio during Vietnam- back then the songs on the radio had depth and meaning. Young people wanted to change the world.

Yeah, back then the songs had depth and meaning, and were able to motivate tens of thousands into the streets.
Of course, hearing the Muzak version of the Stones "Street Fightin' Man over the PA in Safeway leaves me confused. Did we actually win the "Revolution" while I wasn't looking?
Or were we completely co-opted?
Probably neither, simply living our lives, keeping our heads down, while those in power make the same mistakes, learning little from the past.
