I'v been told engine off in the air is strictly reserved for real emergencies or else you just put it to idle to simulate one... Surely switching the engine off altogether is a no no?

@tractorwheelies I'm afraid you've been misinformed; it's perfectly safe to turn the engine off in flight. Some microlights are even designed as self-launcher units for hang-glider wings- the engine only stays on long enough to reach the first thermal.
