@BMD101 Lily Marlene is a song from World War II, so it's an anachronism at the time of this story. I'm sure that Kubrick knew this. But the song is significant because it was really popular among the troops of the different sides... If you look it up here in youtube you'll find lots of versions in all sorts of languages. The song doesn't say anything important, it's about a soldier and his girlfriend, but it was so universal it works very well as a symbol of the power of music to unite.

a bit of triva for everbody Kubrick got married to the actress in this scene

@william0000000 The troops (French) were taught to hate the enemy, but Kirk Douglas's character began to despise his own command and their motives toward war,
This song and the singing of his troops reinforced that there is still a goodness and a kindness in all people,
Remember, after this the whole regiment was ordered to be sent to the front lines,
Paths of Glory is truly a great and underrated film....

but so soften the troops!

What a great scene. I saw this film on TV when I was about 9 or 10 years old in either 1959 or 1960 and it left an indelible impression on me and I am now 59 and own this DVD.

Music is magical and Kubrick a genius

What a brilliant movie! Kubrick's best (except for maybe A Clockwork Orange).
