  • Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowlege and skill!

I have a striker that's not giving me any sparks. Do you think I might improve it if I heat it "to bright orange," and then oil quench it, like you did? It was purchased from a blacksmith who makes many of these; but, mine's a dud!

  • @tjwiltube If it is high carbon stock, oil quenching it at bright orange should give you sparks, if it doesnt there is something wrong...If after that you still dont have any luck, check the peice of flint your working it against, it has to be a sharp edge, if that fails send me another message and I'll hook you up...

  • If my forge was indoors, or if the weather wasn't so cold and windy, I would go outside right now and forge one of these.

Would the tempering process be any different if you were to use an old file as opposed to a coil spring? thanks for the vid!

  • Thanks for your comment and question...The quenching for a file will definately be different, I have found that spring stock responds better to oil its a slower quench, I like to quench file stock in water, but it has to be warm almost hot to the touch, if its cold it will crack the stock and become brittle, file stock can be quenched in oil but we get better sparks with water... Hope this helps and thanks again for your comment... Let us know how it goes
