This is one of my favourite films. I used to watch this so much growing up that I still know the words to this section by heart! Oh dear :D
One thing that always annoyed, I know it's for dramatic effect, but Picard pausing before ordering the fleet to start firing means that you see a couple ships get ripped into whilst waiting!
The Defiant is an awesome little ship, my favourite in fact and a star in it's own right on my fave Trek, DS9 :-)
I knew that Picard could hear the Borg communicating where the damage was, as an after effect of his assimilation and I assumed the area was instantly ready to be fired upon, which is why I didn't understand the need for the pause after the fleet locked on co-ordinates.
Now I have read okipokute's comment below and that very helpfully clarified the need for the pause :D
Pleased to have my Trek knowledge updated after all these years :)
Unfortunately, it's being piloted by Jar-Jar. But it's OK! It's a genius plan; the Borg assimilate Jar-Jar, then they'll end up as lame as he is. Yes, even lamer than they ever were on Voyager!
Picard can still hear the communications going on inside the Borg cube. When Data said he was reading energy fluctuations, Picard told him to put it on screen. With the visuals, Picard was able to make sense of the Borg intel, predicting where and when the next energy fluctuation will occur.
As the Borg tried to compensate for the energy fluctuation, Picard ordered the fleet to fire, causing a cascading failure inside the Borg Cube.
That is not entirely correct. What Picard hears is the Borg dispatching drones to repair an area of the ship with critical damage. It is upon those coordinates he instrucks the fleet to fire. He did not predict anything. He knew exactly what was happening.
true story... though i'm a little sad the defiant was so badly damaged.. i mean since DS9 it was an icone of the dominion wars and probably the dominion's nemesis. ,,brave little ship'' as riker said later ;)
