Dr. Leonard Garrison, flute professor at the University of Idaho, performs and discusses J.S. Bach's Bourrée anglaise from the Partita in A Minor on page 5 of Himie Voxman's Selected Studies. This is required audition material for the 2009 MENC All-Northwest Band and Orchestra. For more information on the audition, please visit http://www.wmea.org/mencnw/. A Big Thanks to Dr. Loraine Enloe for helping to create this video!

  • Fantastic! thank you!

but I was told that the second note in measure 8 is a miss print, I believe its written as a G but I was told it's supposed to be an F. Dr Garrison played it as a G, can anyone clarify?

  • There are misprints in Voxman's book but not in meas. 8. The Bårenreiter edition, based on 18th-century sources, gives the same pitches in meas. 8 as Voxman.

    Thanks, LG

  • Thank you, I am playing this as an audition piece when I go to highschool this next school year, I think I have it down alright and this video has helped tremendously :D

  • Soooo interesting! Thank you!

  • I'm pretty sure this is this most beautiful flute playing I've ever heard. One day, I hope I'd be 1/1 000 000 000th of your talent. I really hope to work with you some day. :D

  • can you play the sarabande, bourr'ee, and badinerie from Bach's suite in B minor?

I really love those songs, and i would like to hear you play them!

btw- u were one of my favorite teachers from blfac! Thanks for being a great sectional teacher :D

  • i am also practicing this masterpiece. My feet are driving to dance while playing the bourree.. haha..

  • thanks for your info. i like your sound

  • Hi Leonard, just a little note to thnk you for the so nice Info. Although i do not play the flute, i just love the sound of it. The reason i run into your vid. Very nice, and you make it sound sooooo easy. ;)) Thnx once again.

  • Thanks for this analysis. Would it be possible for you to do a similar interpretation on Bach's Badinerie from his Suite in B minor? There's a short run across the break near the end of the piece that's particularly troublesome and I'd love to know how you approach it.

  • Thanks for showing how to practice this with an air or diaphragm articulation. I call this technique "playing with pop." Your explanation is great, and I like how you warn against the tut tut!

  • Okay, thanks for the info.
