Etna volcano 1979

This video was taken during August 1979, shortly after the fissure eruption in the beginning of this month. It showes the threatening lava flows of this eruption cooling down. The film also showes an excursion to Etna´s summit craters. Note the degassing activity at Bocca Nova crater. About two weeks after this video was made, it was sight of a catastrophic phreatic explosion. About 200 tourists were in this area at this time. Nine people were killed and more than twenty seriously injured. Also an emergency car was hit by a bomb, causing a gas cylinder to explode, burning nearby tourists.
