  • I've been wondering, what is the correct time to set a Spinnaker?

  • The facetious answer is when you want to go quicker...

The real answer is when you can, ie when the wind is in the right direction relative to the boat, known as the apparent wind angle (AWA), ie apparent to the boat. 90 degrees AWA is side on, 180 is from behind.

With this sort of asymmetric spinnaker, you can set then from about 70 AWA in light winds, and in heavier winds optimally around 140 AWA. A more conventional spinnaker sets around 110 - 175 AWA.

    This is around 95 AWA.
