Adjusting the key seat on the footjoint and getting a straight hole for the key axle may not be easy with very low technology. Here a possible solution that has worked decently well. The footjoint shown is not the same during the different steps:

-footjoint turned and acid stained
-jig for holding footjoint on lathe
-milling the key slot
-strip of sandpaper glued on ridge
-cleaning the key slot
-drilling radially a blind hole (about 3 mm depth)
-correction of hole bottom with a flat surface vertically oriented (step not indispensable)
- tapering hole walls
-aspect of tapered blind hole
-jig for holding footjoint during boring
-footjoint is held beetwen the two conical guides
-1 mm twist drill fixed on top of hand held shaft
-boring axle hole
-the drill exits from a conical guide and enters the other
-cleaning the hole and making it straight
-(if available) four corner tapered reamer for correcting hole axis
- sitting the key and drilling with the 1 mm twist drill

  • thanks a lot for the attention master puglisi!a good suggestion would be to show as if it manufactures the keys of the flute!

  • A juweler makes them for me (easy in Florence!) using the lost wax process and sterling silver. The key comes quite rough from the mold and needs sanding and polishing.
