Opera Italia presented by Antonio Pappano

Three-part series tracing the history of Italian opera presented by Antonio Pappano, world-renowned conductor and music director at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The series features sumptuous music, stunning Italian locations and some of the biggest names in opera as contributors.

Episode 1: Beginnings

In the first programme, Pappano takes a whistle-stop tour of the beginnings of opera, from Monteverdi to Rossini. He also looks at the works of two non-Italian composers, Handel and Mozart, both of whom were pivotal in the development of the art form. Along the way he enlists the help of some of the world's greatest singers - Juan Diego Florez, Joyce DiDonato, Danielle de Niese, Sarah Connolly and Pietro Spagnoli.

  • At the very beginning Pappano says "Italians love opera" - which is not true, not anymore anyway. Most Italians haven't got a clue and don't give a damn about opera, except identifying it with the Three Tenors or the usual stereotypes - fat ladies shouting their lungs out for geriatric audiences and young bores.

Opera is broadcast on TV at unearthly hours (like 3-4 a.m.) and culture in general is a total stranger on Italian TV. All we get is trashy shows and idiotic miniseries.

  • Great show, I wish we had shows like this in this country, even PBS is opting out of this kind of programming. Our television is still a waste land..... The only culture we know in this country is Pop culture... what a pity

  • OH MY GOD!!! I WALKED DOWN THAT EXACT STREET!!!!!

  • Wonderful series, thank you.

  • only BBC can give this kind of cultured great program. thank to youtube, we can also see it in other countries

  • Bravo! António Pappano.

  • Thank you! I had lost in on Italian TV! :D

  • My Lord, y does he have to sing? His singing is so bad.

  • Thank you for uploading this series. As, of course, it was not shown in this country,

    I am most appreciative.
