Whether you are traveling by car, tour bus, plane or train, at some point you are probably going to need a cab. Today's all about the music business travel tip is how to avoid being taken for a ride or more so, your wallet being taken for a ride by a bad cab driver.

Independent artists often times need to hail or call a cab to get to and from the airport, the train station, the hotel or the venue. The problem is these artists become a target for some cab drivers. They clearly do not look like locals and come off like the types that can be driven the long way to their destination with out their knowledge while ending up paying an inflated fare that is well over what it should be.

When you are handling your own band transportation or a road manager is, you are planning routes, figuring out times and how long it will take to get from point a to point b. It is not about knowing the exact routes, though if you have the time, that can help, but it can be more about appearing that you have a sense of where you are and that you know the city you are in.

A couple simple touring tips when you are on the road and require a cab is to spend a minute and learn something about the city that is a little more local based. This can be a hint that you know where you are. Second, you can look up in certain cities, Transportation Authorities to know what you should be paying. Of course, you can GPS as well but even just asking about certain roadwork (something you can look up on your phone by typing in traffic, the city you are in and local news) will give you a simple upper hand that can help protect you from handing out too much cash or being taken for an extra long ride.
