A Himalayan Black Bear wandered into Upper Sichey area near the East District Administration complex of Gangtok on Tuesday morning and injured three forest officials who tried to capture the intruder. Forest department joint director JB Subba, DFO (Territorial, East Sikkim) BB Gurung and Himalayan Zoological Park medical assistant Sonam Tshering Lepcha sustained injuries before the offender was finally tranquilized and locked in a cage.
Mr. Subba sustained severe injuries on the left side of his face resulting in profuse bleeding, Mr. Gurung was clawed by the bear on the left leg and thigh and Mr. Lepcha is suspected to have dislocation in his right arm.
Of the three injured, Subba had been mauled by the bear, a fully grown adult, before the victim managed to escape from the jaws of death. The victims were immediately taken to the STNM hospital where they were treated. Mr. Subba will be flown to a private clinic in Siliguri for further treatment.
After attacking the three forest officials the bear, already having seven to eight tranquilizer shots crawled to a small drain. A couple of more tranquilizers were shot on the bear after which it finally went to sleep. By this time, a standing order by Chief Wildlife Warden NT Bhutia, who was at the spot since morning, had been issued to terminate the bear.
