Dodging the draft in Israel - 10 Aug 07

Israel's military has seen dwindling numbers of conscripts though service is compulsory for for both men and women over 18 year olds.

Recent figures released by the military say that many are now using religion or claiming illness to escape the draft, with just 57 per cent of those eligible actually completing their service.

Good for them for not joining the military. In USA we are required to register for selective service but many people just ignore it. The main reason is nothing happens when we ignore the requirement. Well technically something does happens but no one been prosecuted starting from 1985

@JanSobieskii Israel is a Jewish state whose main goal is to be a homeland for all the Jews, a safe haven from antisemitism and oppression. Since it has fought numerous wars, it cannot afford to take ANY chance when it comes to national survival. Besides, military service is now an integral part of Israeli culture.
