The Pontifical John Paul II Institute for the study of marriage and family is a little known theological faculty at the Lateran University in Rome. Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec City explains what the institute does and his role with the institute. The John Paul II institute for the study of marriage and family is a theological institute at the Lateran University. This faculty was founded in 1981 by John Paul II, one year after the Synod on the family in 1980. This was a recommendation of the Synod, to implement studies on marriage. When we look around and at the crisis on the value of marriage and family, so, it was a big need. I was called personally to teach at this faculty in 1996 and I stayed there up to 2001 when I was made bishop and sent to the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity. The John Paul II Institute not only helps to foster a better understanding of the familys mission in todays society, but also an understanding of how the family evangelizes the world at large. The family is there to evangelize, and that means to be a Good News. And the fact that you have a couple that is really married sacramentally in the church, that means they receive a gift from Christ, a gift from the Spirit. And so their love is strengthened, is made more fruitful spiritually and also humanly, so that they can live their love in a deep unity, faithfulness and openness to life. And this brings enthusiasm and hope to the world, thats the meaning of to evangelize.
