Clean fresh water is something most people don't think about until it's gone, but in recent times more have come to realize this and are installing hand pumps on their wells in this unstable world. If you're going to install a hand pump, buy a deep well pump that has a sealed top, and plunger that goes into the well. These are sanitary and there's no need for priming. Those open top pitcher pumps are not sanitary and can actually introduce bacterial contamination into your well. I realize the pump I chose is expensive, but there are cheaper deep well pumps that are sanitary pumps. I chose mine because I liked that pump, it is a quality pump made to last, and it is made in the US. You can't put a price on clean water.
This is our new hand pump installed on a 110 foot well. The pump cylinder is set at 60 feet, and there's another 20 feet of drop pipe and a foot valve below that. Drop pipe is PVC. Foot valve is at 80 feet. Water level in the well is at 35 feet. The water comes from a white sandstone and is like spring water. This will provide a source of clean water during extended power outages and for other things too. These pumps don't need priming because the cylinder and plunger is set below the water line. I also have a hose bibb that bolts on in place of the fountain to hook up a garden hose. The pump is the Baker Monitor Fountain pump and there were several of these around my area years ago but most of them are now gone. The well was drilled with my cable tool rig.
