HIP-HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES is a riveting documentary that examines representations of gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through the lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback turned activist. Conceived as a loving critique from a self-proclaimed hip-hop head, Hurt examines issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in todays hip-hop culture.

Great documentary. Surprised to see Black men speaking out against the sexism in hip hop. Keep speaking out!

WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE ACTORS AND ACTING OUT MAKE BELIEVE SCENARIOS. WHEN PEOPLE HEAR MUSIC, WE WANT MEANING TO WHAT UR SAYING AND IF IT IS GOOD. I WANA FEEL LIKE DANCING, N HAVING A GOOD TIME!!. NOT F**** GOING OUT AND MURDERING PEOPLE!. smh..

  • 9:05 I personally think Military culture should be allowed violence if it didnt we wouldnt get much done plus the troops are having to do violent things for a higher reason than just to look tough they're fighting for our freedom and that should be taken into consideration

  • Anybody notice that white people fled the inner cities about 5-10 years before violent hip hop hit. Cointel pro is the FBI

  • @strapped24seven Hip Hop definitely did not start the problem or is the problem, however, it is definitely not a SOLUTION to the problem, instead it contributes...

  • @filmtress I completely understand that these days. I used to be one of the grittiest dues in the streets, but when I finally grew up and decided to reclaim my family and my fatherhood, most of that griminess feel away. Now, I thnk before I act: how will this effect my kids right now and/or long term? And that alone has kept me out of the streets, employed (even though I want to quit every other day), from cathcing another felony, out of prison and most importantly, an early grave.

  • @Necrophil89 umm.. no.
