When you share a printer over a network, you can print from anywhere you are on that network. This lets you set up a printer and print to it while it's hundreds of feet away, without moving. This also lets you set up a printer for multiple people. Printers can be shared wirelessly or wired (ethernet).

If you share a printer this way, you will need to always leave your computer on. Otherwise, others can't print to the printer.

This guide applies to printers that aren't made to work on a network. Many higher-end laser printers are made to be on a network, and have an ethernet port in the back. It is generally best to set a printer up on a network that way if possible.

  • I have something similar: iMac Leopard 10.5.6 - Got a canon pixma iP4500 on the mac. Have pc running xp sp3. Router is a DIR-655. Wireless is OFF (CAT 5e) installed bonjour. will find printer, but won't print.

any ideas on how to get both pc's to print to this printer?

  • Sorry it took so long to respond; my guess is that you don't have the correct drivers on your Windows machine. Have you tried searching Google or the manufacturers site?

  • If only it were this easy.

  • Are you having problems with it? I'm happy to help you.

  • I'm trying to get a printer connected on a pc (on the wifi network) to be detected and able to print to from the mac. Tried everything- work groups, manually doing the ip, etc, nothing works.

  • Try opening System Preferences, going to Network, click "Advanced", and then WINS.

Add a WINS server for your router's IP (usually 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.1.1). This solved my problems.

However, make sure you have the most recent updates; I had this problem, and it was fixed in a later release of Leopard (Apple icon > Software Update).

  • does this work for wireless printing from an iPhone and iPad?

  • Ahh yes, if only it worked this way. That would be great. But instead, it doesn't work at all =(

  • I have a problem .. I followed instructions to get my computer running 10.5.6 to work with the other computer running 10.3.9 ..The computer running 10.3.9 has the printer. I got the computers to see each other, once. And I was able to print. Now,I can't.

  • yeah, I've tried looking... you vid seemed to be the most complete. I got the mac to see the external hd on the pc. So that's good. it also sees the printer and sends a document, but the printer pauses.

I'll check to see if it's a driver issue. otherwise, I know I'm close. Thanks.
