More "faux" news from FOX. The University of Florida is laying off many employees due to a statewide budget crisis. The Gainesville real estate market is actually worse than many other parts of the state. Good professional-level jobs are scarce, and students absorb most of the part-time work. Property taxes are among the highest in Florida.

If you like trees, you'll love Gainesville. But this is no mecca in hard times.

@apollonmusagete They laid off my father in law. He worked in administrations and they were cutting many jobs 4 years ago to now. Also, there are many skeleton neighborhoods. Many of those new subdivisions they were putting up were never finished. They are just empty lots.

I've owned a house in Gainesville for 10 years, Haile Plantation is a very nice quiet place to live, and yes, lots of trees. Beats the other 10 places I have lived in Florida. If you work for UF, you might have a secure job. Many people agree that if you go away from Gainesville you may find a better job, due to the low pay to students taking the work.

They didnt mention anything about the student slave work force sucking up all the jobs, thus making the pay super cheap everywhere because they know there will always be students to do the work. i kinda have a love and hate relationship with this city. The reason why unemployment is low is because they either already have a good job at the school or hospital [the reason they moved here] or they are a student who is working a part-time retail job. The only jobs available here are retail. All the "good jobs" are flooded by college students or recently graduates, creating impossible competition for the few jobs that are available in this small town. The closes "big city" with opportunities, Jacksonville, is over an hour away. Don't move here!
