This video is edited with COPYRIGHT FREE (PUBLIC DOMAIN) footage from the end of "Carnival of Souls", a film directed by Herk Harvey in 1962. Retrieved from www.archive.org

The song was composed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. It's track one on the "Ghosts" LP. I know there's lots of stock footage videos on the Nine Inch Nails "Ghosts" group, but I'd like to take a moment and explain myself.

This film was shown to me as a child by my father. It's a significant piece because it gives you a rare look at the abandoned Saltair Palace outside of Salt Lake City. The pavilion itself has a great and long history.

Herk Harvey, the director of the film, waived his earnings in order to get the filmed made on a $20,000 dollar budget. It was filmed in two weeks. It was the first film featuring Candace Hilligoss, and I believe one of the first "She was dead and didn't know it" films.

Make sure that you purchase/rent the Criterion Edition of "Carnival of Souls" and watch the extras. It's an excellent film, and very creepy. It's also available to download at archive.org.

This film was NOT received well during release, and was shunned for years. Later in the early 90's, it was "found" again, and praised for it's creepiness and horror without resorting to "physical gore and violence".

Thanks for watching. Please no crude negative feedback. If you're going to be negative, be constructive about it. Thanks.

  • Very fitting..music and images.. I just wish there weren't the pop up boxes with information on it..

  • @herasfolly I deleted them. Thanks. If you ever see a youtube vid with those, you can "disable" them by clicking the "i" next to the resolution at the bottom.

  • @ethanwc

My goodness that was quick! Thank you for the information.

Not to take away your research on the film..you did a good job.

I just felt it took away from the film and music.

  • @herasfolly I couldn't figure out how to turn off annotations, so I just deleted them. Stupid feature, anyways.

I agree with you. It's moody without, so that's how it rolls.

    Thanks for the view/comment.

  • It's one of my favourite. It's not a great film, but it's very unsettling and unforgettable.

  • My son posted this. I first encountered "Carnival of Souls" on a TV broadcast in 1974, when I was eighteen. I caught the last ten minutes or so and for the next twenty years it was, "Where can I find a copy of that film?!?" Once seen it's never forgotten.

Another film in that category is "Right Hand of the Devil" (1963) also seen back then. I have yet to see it again.

  • "How do we find old movies like this? "

Try "Horror Hotel," another good one. And look on the IMDb for films made by Val Lewton. There's a start!

  • "Freaks" (1932) Go check it out. Also, "Dead of Night" (1945). Ask if you want some others. Maybe I should do a NIN video from one of those films as well. Totally could. Hmmm...

  • Sorry about that. Youtube's "annotations" feature can be turned off by clicking the lower right hand icon.
